The Cabman Story The Mysteries of a London 'Growler' edition by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Reference eBooks

The Cabman's Story is a short work by Sir Arthor Conan Doyle, who of course is famious for his highly sucessful Sherlock Holmes stories. It is an accounting of several interesting episodes from a (horse-drawn)cab driver in London sometime in the last half of the 19th century. They are interesting and insightful of that period, and quite believable. Comparing this story to the Sherlock Holmes stories seems a little unfair, but I would say that the characters or plots are not developed enough to grade them on the same level. That said, it is entertaining in its own right and I would recommmend it.

The Cabman Story The Mysteries of a London 'Growler' edition by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Reference eBooks Reviews

Fascinating, with a great twist that I wasn't expecting.
The Cabman's Story The Mysteries of a London 'Growler'
I hated to see this one end. It pulled me in and I was hoping
for "more".
This is a classic, but would it still get published today, on its own, if not for the famous author's name? Most assuredly not. Why is this story read today? If the answer is only because of the name of the author, that's not enough of a reason.

It's an extremely short story (8 pages) of a very long-winded narrator. Like many of Doyle's non-Sherlock stories, this one focuses on the mundane situation of a normal family. First, you have to know what a 'growler' is--a Victorian version of a cabbie. And, based on this story, cabbies haven't changed much! A family goes on vacation to the countryside for an extended time. There are so many people, and so much luggage, that the father has to ride up front with the cabbie. The cabman relates several tales of things that have happened to him over the years and things he has seen. I'm sure today's cabmen could relate. My favorite story (and only really memorable one) is the tale of a burglar who not only hid in the taxi after a robbery, but also used it as his escape vehicle.

I just didn't like this, even as a free read and even though it was a short read. I just wanted to rush and finish it. It just wasn't as good as some other short stories by Doyle and I felt like a teenager who had been assigned this as a homework assignment--not a pleasant feeling.
Never having read this book before, I was unsure of what to expect. I found that this is quite a captivating book that leave the reader not wanting to put it down. Would recommend for someone who has a bit of time to kill...you won't want to put this down!
This is just an interesting little tale of a cabman relating some of his past experiences to a passenger sitting on the box with him as his family has taken up all of the room inside the cab.
This is a review of the free version.

This is very short, about 110 locations. It's a cabbie telling about the odd events he's seen or had happen.

The second story is really quite impressive - I don't want to ruin it, but that guy must have been an artist to do what he was in a cab while it was moving.
This is a short story not a book and relates interesting events happening to a London taxi driver. His "car" is a closed wagon carriage pulled by horses in London in the early 20th Century. It's a quick read but likable.
